More Than a Match: Our Causes

The Spirit Squadron believes the power of the drum and chant shouldn’t stay inside the stadium. We are “The Squad Behind the Squad,” but we are also a community, dedicated to using our platform for progress in the DMV and beyond.

Here are the pillars of our advocacy and the organizations we champion:

LGBTQ+ Advocacy & Prideraiser

Every June, we turn our goals into action. Through our annual Prideraiser campaign, members pledge a dollar amount for every goal the Washington Spirit scores during Pride Month.

Our Prideraisers have benefitted:

  • The Wanda Alston Foundation, the only non-profit in D.C. solely dedicated to providing housing and support services to houseless LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Mary’s House for Older Adults (MHFOA), DC’s first affordable living facility for LGBTQ+ older adults. It intends to build welcoming communities that address affordability, accessibility, and the unique needs of LGBTQ+ older adults. MHFOA strives to reduce social isolation, fear, and vulnerability that older LGBTQ+ adults often experience due to aging, discrimination, and intolerance.

Racial Justice & Black Lives Matter

The Squadron is committed to ensuring that soccer in the DMV is a space where Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) fans, players, and staff are celebrated and protected. We recognize that our stadium sits in the heart of a diverse District, and we strive to reflect that community in our stands.

D.C. Statehood & Home Rule

D.C. is our home, and we believe its residents deserve full representation. During the 2025 season, the Squadron introduced the “Free D.C.” chant at the 51st minute of every home match—symbolizing the push for D.C. to become the 51st state. We stand with Free DC, and local activists to demand “No Taxation Without Representation.”

Gender Equity in Sports

We are a supporters’ group born from a passion for women’s soccer. We advocate for equal pay, increased media coverage, and investment in girls’ youth soccer programs across Maryland, Virginia, and the District. We believe every girl in the DMV should see a professional pathway on the pitch at Audi Field.

Environmental Sustainability

In coordination with the Washington Spirit’s sustainability goals, the Squadron promotes eco-friendly match-day habits. From encouraging the use of public transit and the D.C. Bike Share to reducing waste from tifo production, we aim to keep our city green.
